About the Therapist
You’ve probably found my page because in one way or another you’re lost, confused, overwhelmed, unsure of what to do, or where to turn. I know you’re struggling, and I’m glad you are here. Here’s more about me so you can get a feel for what it would be like to work with me.
I currently practice as a licensed professional counselor in Cincinnati, OH. My counseling approach rests on a couple of basic assumptions:
1) Life is inherently difficult at times. I wish our culture talked more openly about this, but I think its important for people to know that you are not “messed up” or “broken” because you are struggling right now. Despite the fact that you might be in great pain, I am confident we can help you to create a meaningful and fulfilling life.
2) My role as a therapist is not to give you advice, or tell you what to do. Think of me as your teammate. We are in this together. I bring my training and experience to the table, but your input, feedback, thoughts, feelings and actions carry as much weight as mine in this process. Therapy works when we work together.
3) I do not provide a one-size fits all treatment. My first priority is to get to know and understand you as a person. Even if you’ve been given a diagnoses of anxiety, depression or PTSD, those are important pieces of the puzzle, but its not the whole story. I strive to help in a way that makes the most sense for your unique set of needs and circumstances.
Background and Training
I received my Masters degree at the University of Dayton in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have worked in a college counseling setting, assisting students struggling with college-life related stressors such as stress-management , home-sickness, identity issues, relationship issues, and career concerns, in addition to major mental health concerns such as anxiety, social phobia, depression, PTSD, OCD, eating concerns and self-harm. I have also provided psychotherapy services through an agency setting for individuals ranging in age from 10-65. Presenting problems varied across the board, but again included different forms of anxiety and mood disorders and/or behavioral concerns.
Okay, but who are you really?
Its hard to put into words why exactly I became a therapist, but I can tell you its one of the best decisions I’ve made. My work with you is incredibly meaningful. The thing is, I’ve been where you are. I know what its like to feel totally helpless and out of control. The other thing is, with help, I found my way through. I so value being with others as they do the same.
By no means am I trying to suggest that I have it all together, in fact I think its important for you to know that I definitely don’t. That’s one thing about therapy that I really value. Its a space for us to drop the act, to be honest, real, and raw. There is so much healing in owning up to that. #thestruggleisreal. Acknowledging the complexities and chaos in our life is the first step in moving forward.
^Can you tell I have a hard time not talking about my work? Outside of being a therapist, well, I spend most of my time with my husband Branden, and our two cats Reptar and Boo. I love the outdoors and being active. I drink way too much coffee, and have watched all seasons of the show parks and rec more times than I’d like to admit.
